About Me

An entrepreneur with over 30 years experience creating and managing successful business ventures, Michael Sauvante is the author of numerous business articles and a book on entrepreneurism. Long upheld as one of Silicon Valley's most successful entrepreneurs, Sauvante is a long-time advocate of business sustainability and his thoughts are detailed in his article, "The Triple Bottom Line: A Board Room Guide."

In The Triple Bottom Line, Michael Sauvante opens by pointing out that most businesses have traditionally focused on economic (cash) capital, which encompasses a business's intellectual property and assets. Michael Sauvante explains that the profit of cash capital is traditionally known as "the bottom line." He then discusses the triple bottom line (TBL), a concept that points to two additional forms of capital that are not normally accounted for, natural capital and social capital. According to Michael Sauvante, social and natural capital should receive a return on investment, just like economic capital. The gains made by all three capitals comprise the TBL.

Michael Sauvante attests that economic capital is understood, but believes natural and social capital are not as well known. As the article continues, Sauvante defines natural capital as resources provided by Earth: plants, animals, and other naturally occurring materials. Sauvante states that most businesses treat natural resources as if they are limitless, while the truth is quite the opposite. Regarding social capital, Michael Sauvante says the third segment of TBL is split into two parts: human capital, or people such as employees, advisors, and suppliers; and social systems, other institutions that provide the foundation for a business's existence. Social systems can take the form of educational and government organizations, as well as other businesses.

As defined by Michael Sauvante, business sustainability, or a business's ability to exist so long as its participants wish for it to exist, comes from a positive profit made on TBL. Those interested in learning more about TBL can read the full Triple Bottom Line article along with others he has written on www.NovaQuestVentures.com.
