Peter D. Kiernan’s is a tale of two careers. For 20 years he was a Wall Street investment banker, most of that time as a partner at Goldman Sachs. He left to form a venture firm that backed start- up and early stage companies and was also president of a multi-billion dollar hedge fund. One day an old friend, Dana Reeve, asked him to take over the foundation that she and her late husband, actor Chris Reeve, had created years before after an accident left the former Superman star wheel chair bound. Within days of Kiernan’s assent, Dana lost her own battle with lung cancer. A new career began. For the next five years Kiernan transformed the ailing foundation, traveling the globe raising funds for research and bold new therapies, meeting with the best scientists in the field, and rallying the support of Washington decision makers, state governors, party leadership and corporate chieftains. Following Chris Reeve’s lead, Kiernan consolidated offices and helped the foundation create a revolutionary open architecture approach to paralysis research. He called it a laboratory without walls. In fact it was a consortium of the world’s great thinkers about paralysis who were managed to collaborate rather than work in isolation. Working the halls of Congress, the foundation was able to get the first law passed to fund paralysis research in our nation’s history: The Christopher Reeve Paralysis Act. Kiernan was also a tireless advocate for the passage of embryonic stem cell legislation and the overturn of the Bush ban on federal funding for stem cell research. What he found in speaking to Washington leaders surprised him—the data and demographics they were using were hopelessly out of date. Gathering other non-profits and academic institutions, the Reeve Foundation conducted the largest survey in history aimed at uncovering the details of the lives and experiences of people who are paralyzed and spinal-cord injured. The results of the 30,000-person survey were highly illuminating. Nearly 1 in 6 Americans is paralyzed and the number of spinal cord injuries was five times larger than what the federal government presumed. Kiernan met with leaders of the Centers of Disease Control to implement special locomotor treadmill training sites at select locations around the country. Kiernan’s next move at Reeve was to engage the Department of Defense and Veterans Affairs to create better re-entry and therapies for paralyzed veterans, especially when they left the armed forces. By mobilizing the non-profit world, government agencies, corporations, Congressional leaders, individual citizens and the military against a common foe, Kiernan and the Reeve Foundation saw greater progress in getting paralyzed Americans greater recovery of function. And with increasing frequency the work of the foundation meant that people who came wheeling in, after intense work and dedication would come walking out. The number is still a minority of the cases the foundation encounters. But slowly and steadily the percentage is growing. Kiernan says that scientists call that a “motivating factor” but nothing compares to the joy of watching a young person who has been confined to a wheelchair stand up for the first time. That is a joy.
