La Petite Baleen

In 1979, La Petite Baleen Swim Schools began in the back yard of John Kolbisen and Irene Madrid. Starting with their three young kids and several other children from the neighborhood, they developed a complete swim school curriculum in their pool. Today, the courses they created focus on teaching self-esteem enrichment, coping skills, and a love of swimming to people of all ages. La Petite Baleen offers year-round classes at locations in Half Moon Bay, San Francisco, and San Bruno, California. The School’s experienced, local instructors attend intensive clinics and shadow senior-level teachers for 40 hours before taking on their own classes. Instructors develop their training philosophies and curricula around the School’s guiding motto of “Pace, Pattern, Compassion, and Fun.” Courses are designed for differing levels of ability, and they foster improvement and mastery of skills while encouraging creativity and amusement. Parent support and communication also play a central role in the School’s teaching methodologies. Instructors provide parents with regular progress reports, hold one-on-one phone conferences, and send newsletters to keep them up to date about their children’s achievements. Such teacher-parent activities promote student development outside of the classroom. La Petite Baleen’s website serves as a valuable resource for parents of current and prospective students. The site provides member testimonials and information on the School’s three swimming facilities, including its newest and largest location at San Francisco’s Crissy Field.
